2011 Hinman Championship

Dear Mr. Person and NHSF Board Members,

Thank you for helping me get to the 2011 US Sailing National Team Racing Championship for the Hinman Trophy. Our team name was the Socal Luchadores. A Luchadore is a mexican wrestler that wears a funny mask like Nacho Libre. We didn't wear the masks while competing but were able to get a few photo's of the team wearing them while hanging out on land. In hindsight our team name should have been "The Superlatives" since we boasted the youngest (Nevin Snow), heaviest (Andrew Campbell), one of the oldest (myself), and the prettiest (Becky, Jackie, Allie).

We had never sailed together as a team before the event but there were a few connections that I thought would put us on the same page quickly. Andrew and I both attended Georgetown University. We weren't there at the same time, but we both used the same team racing playbook. I also coached Nevin's high school team last year and basically taught him the same plays. It was unfortunate for us that we did most of our racing early on the first day because we lost a few close races that were a product of just learning to sail with each other. It didn't take us long to hit our stride as we went undefeated on the 2nd day and beat the eventual champions with 1, 2, 3. However, our losses on the first day put us in a 3-way tie for 6th and losing the tiebreaker. Had we made the final six, I think we were poised to do some serious damage. But that's the way the cookie crumbled for us.

We all had a great time and I can't thank you enough for your support. By helping sailors and teams make it to these events, the NHSF is singlehandedly improving the level of sailing in the United States. Thanks again.
