Collin Duffy '11 US Laser Nat'ls

September 16, 2011

Dear Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation,

I would like to offer my sincere thanks to the Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation for your support this summer. Without the help of the foundation, my experiences at the U.S. Laser Nationals would probably not have happened.

U. S. Laser Nationals was truly a great way to end my first year of competitive sailing. Although I did not rank in the top of the fleet, I still believe I succeeded. I started my summer in the Laser program at NHYC. I started the summer season floundering in my Laser, but thanks to the great coaching of my instructor, Charlie Underwood, I improved and became a competitive Laser sailor. Charlie encouraged me to sign up for the U.S. Laser Nationals at the Cal Yacht Club in August.

Compared to the local Newport Harbor races I had raced in this summer, the U.S. Nationals was a major jump to the next level for me. Just the sheer size and length of the regatta was daunting to me. Without the help of the foundation, the entry fee alone would have overwhelmed me. Throughout the four day regatta, I progressed at a pretty steady rate everyday. I was the youngest competitor in full rig Lasers by two years, but I ended up beating adults and college age adults. I had some great starts, and now I know that there are advanced techniques I need to learn to keep my lead in the race. Competing at the National level has inspired me to continue to improve and learn more advanced racing skills.

My great summer of sailing would not have been the same if I had not had the opportunity to test my skills at the next level. I am grateful to the Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation for providing me that opportunity.

Yours truly,

Colin Duffy
