2013 Optimist Team Trials

Dear Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation,

Thank you so much for your contribution which allowed me to attend Optimist Team Trials 2013 in Pewaukee, Wisconsin with 194 Opti's. It was my first trip without my parents and we had to take 2 separate planes to Milwaukee. Pewaukee Lake is about 30 minutes from Milwaukee. I was able to stay with Johnny Ruf, an Olympic and local sailor and Mike Pinckney who coached me on and off the water.

I have never sailed on a lake before so it was very tricky. The conditions for practice were perfect, except for one day it was so light that no one was able to sail that day. On the race days the wind was 10 knots and shifty. The starting line was so huge that they could have it like 80 kids on it. A highlight was on the opening night of the Team Trials, Harken headquarters had a big party for all the competitors. It was so cool because we got a tour of the huge factory where they make all their products. Both of the Harken brothers talked to us and wish luck for the first day of racing. The weather varied from super cold to California weather? One of the racing days it was 39 degrees and raining and the water temperature was only 40. This was my first time sailing in a dry suit, and they aren't very comfortable.

I had so much fun. Thank you for helping me.
