US Women's Double-Handed Championship

Dear Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation,

Thank you for responding and sponsoring me for my Ida Lewis trip. This year was extremely fun for Bayley Davidson and I since we had known most of the girls and had a lot more experience under our belt then most of our competitors.

The US Women's Double-Handed Championship was held out of Lake Minnetoka Yacht Club/ Lake Minnetoka Sailing School in Minnesota this year. The venue was so beautiful and the yacht club was adorable. This was the first yacht club that I had ever been to were you have to take a boat to get there since it is located on an island. At first I didn't know how they were going to store the 38 C420's and the 76 girls but they ended up fitting everyone and everything very nicely and the Race Committee ended up holding a truly great regatta.

There was only one misfortunate thing that got on my nerves. During the clinic days we had great perfect breeze. It was blowing anywhere from 7-11 knots and it was a lot of fun. But when it came to the race days the wind decided to completely shut off. It was so bad that on the last day we didn't even launch our boats cause they knew we weren't going to get any races off.

But somehow through all of the drifting races Bayley and I ended up getting second by only one point. Most people would be very sad to lose by only a point but I am just so overjoyed that we placed in this regatta. It had been mine and Bayley favorite regatta for the past three years and now we are at the top (practically) and that all of our hard work is actually paying off.

Any who because of your help you made the regatta possible for Bayley and I and that means the world to me. Because of your help we were able to travel to this US Championship and place second which was better then I ever thought I could of done. Your support means the world to me.

Thank you,
Carolyn Smith

PS: These photos are from the regatta. The First one is of all the California girls who participated in the regatta.

The Second one is of my house mates, we had become really go friends with a team from Maine, Julia Lambert and Haley McMahon, and the other girls are local friends Lea Russel and Victoria Lewis.

The Last one is of all of us (the housemates) doing our victory jump on the last day for what we thought was a successful regatta.

Also if you are interested I made a YouTube video about the event that is sort of a documentary of the event. You can type in Ida Lewis 2012 or the link is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TuvnYXcuLs&feature=g-all-u
