2011 St. Francis Yacht Club

Dear NHSF Board Members,

On behalf of the UCI sloops sailing team, I would like to thank you for the financial support you provided us. We had a great weekend racing at St. Francis Yacht Club and learned a great amount about match racing.

On Saturday, we waited around until about 2pm before enough breeze came through the bay. We raced 6 out of the 8 teams and ended the day with 5 wins. Our only loss the whole day was to CMA and we had an exciting gybing duel against USC in the final race allowing us to inch just half a boat length ahead for the win.

On Sunday, we went into the day tied for 1st place with Stanford and CMA. We had beaten Stanford, but lost to CMA the previous day, so we knew we needed to win our last two matches to secure our spot in the top two. Unfortunately, we were unable to beat UCLA which put us in 3rd place. As the format of the regatta, we then entered a best of three series with 4th place boat, UCLA. The first race, the current was switching from a flood to an ebb and we overshot layline, but fought to stay close. They finished just boat lengths ahead of us, and we knew what we had to do to beat them the next two races. We were able to pull it back together and lead UCLA around the course both races, even pushing them over the line early in the 3rd race.

I have also attached some photos of myself, Brian Hoover, and Colin Kincaid from the weekend. We were racing sail number 6 in the picture.

Thank you so much for your support! We would not be able to learn from regattas like this and be an active, competitive team without your help. We greatly appreciate the support!
