2011 Hinman Championship

Dear Newport Harbor Sailing Foundation,

Thank you for all of your support and helping me to compete at the 2011 US Team Racing Championship. This was my first Hinman regatta and it ranked up there with the best regattas that I have ever been a part of.

After team Triple Double assembled in the Houston airport, we drove an hour to the regatta venue. The breeze was up and so we checked in with US Sailing and went out for a practice session. The practice was shortened due to heavy winds, rain, and lightning. We went back to the hotel and talked some strategy for the next day.

The small storm blew through that night and we woke up on the first day of competition to beautiful blue skies, 10 knots of wind and temperatures in the 70s. We looked over the rotation schedule and were happy to see that we had 8 races planned for the day and did not have to rig or de-rig. At the end of the day we went 4 and 4 with quality wins over Team Extreme, Larchmont Yacht Club, and our college coach Mitch Hall from team Who Dat. We were pleased with where we stood in the results and spent the rest of the evening in the pool perfecting our flips off of the diving board.

Day two was going to separate the contenders from the pretenders. The conditions were similar to day one. We felt comfortable and thought that we had some good momentum built up after day one. We went on to finish the day 1 and 5. That performance knocked us out of the top 6. We were disappointed to have not sailed to our potential on Saturday and not make the top 6, but at the end of the regatta we were proud of how we sailed. We were in every race and beat some of the best teams at the regatta.

Day three consisted of watching the final 6 compete and cheering on all of our friends who were still racing. Team Minor Threat sailed great all weekend and was a very deserving winner.

The Houston Yacht Club did a superb job of organizing the regatta. The race committee was top of the line, the food was delicious and the people showed great hospitality. I hope to be a part of this awesome regatta next year.

Thank you again for all of your support.
